5 Things That Will Make Me Turn Away From Your Blog

I thought this would be a fun post to write about, and hopefully, I’m not the only one who feels this way. Some of these will not bother other readers, but this is what bothers me from the perspective of being a Christian blogger and reader.

1. ADS

*takes a deep breath

I get it. I know people want to make money off blogging. I know many of us want easy solutions. But spamming your own site with ads is, first of all, distracting. You are putting more emphasis on other people and their products than your own work.

Second, I came to your blog to read something, which is why you want to make money in the first place, right? From your own work? I didn’t come to your site to wait for it to load up and act like when my parents had dial-up for internet connection. Please do not let me relive that.

If a site does not load within a few seconds, and ads are downloading, truthfully, I am usually gone.

2. Sharing Other People’s Work Word For Word

As a Christian blogger and reader, I’ve seen a number of bloggers sometimes copy word for word, paragraph upon paragraph, of devotionals, song lyrics, or parts of a book they really enjoyed. I know there is no malicious intent to steal the work of the author, but everyone…when you are copying word for word from someone that is plagiarizing, it is stealing. Giving credit isn’t always enough, remember the smaller the pieces (poetry or song lyrics) the higher percentage of what you share.

For example, if a song has two verses and one chorus by sharing a verse and chorus you have shared two-thirds of that singer’s work.

You are taking away the opportunity of that author, singer, (whoever) and a potential audience for them. Why should your reader care to go to the source when you are already giving it to them? Think about it. Just because other people do it (with ignorance) does not mean it is lawfully correct.

Instead please summarize what you enjoyed and direct your readers to the source for them to read themselves. Do not use material on your blog that you did not create or write.

Because if you do, I’m gone.

3. Cursing

Writing down words I think is different than saying them. People swear, sadly in my opinion, almost unconsciously. It’s like a doctor hits someone in the knee, and the knee bounces up. Our words can be like that.

I’m against swearing and cursing, but I know it happens especially with people trying to curb it. However, and this is directed at my fellow Christian bloggers again, we consciously are making choices every time we write a word. There is no excuse in my opinion. Do not lecture me by saying, “God loves me.” Yes, He absolutely does, but are you honestly trying to tell me He loves the words out of your mouth too?

It sounds more like an excuse to me, and I know because I’m good at lying to myself with excuses too.

4. Bitterness, Self Pity, Jealousy, Woe Is Me

I can’t take it.

We all have our own voice in our head that sometimes we let beat ourselves up. Sometimes we complain, and some of us love to complain, whine, and mope.

Considering I already have to rebuke myself of when I am on the road to self-pity and woe is me, I am not going to listen to someone openly whine because I do not want to be part of it, or get sucked into it. It’s easy to be consumed by darkness.

Being honest about our feelings is one thing, and it does help us connect with others, but you know what I’m talking about. When we are just going on and on with no true point in most of the post. We want to rant and we sometimes seek attention and sympathy.

We bloggers have a platform, use it for others. If you want to write and whine to yourself get a private journal.

I am trying to say this gently, and I know it sounds harsh, cause it is. But hear me when I say, we can either pull people out of the mud THEY are in, or we can bring people down into the mud WE are in.

5. The Same Old Stuff

Be it trends, challenges, etc. I like new ideas, uniqueness, hearing someone’s perspective and voice. For me, as a reader, when multiple bloggers post the same title, even when the actual post may be genuinely unique, I am usually turned off by the title alone. It doesn’t mean that person is a bad blogger either, it’s just a personal taste of myself as a reader.

Some people really enjoy reading challenges, what is trending, or reading multiple posts on the same topic, and that’s entirely okay.

If you are writing a post on something that’s been covered multiple times, consider having your title give insight into what you want to add to the topic. 🙂

Stand out.

And that’s all for today. 🙂

      1. I agree that it is a shame. I have used some bad language over the last six years. I try not to include them even though that is how I feel at that moment.
Your point is taken to heart

  1. Girlll these points are so good! 🙂 Each and every one turns me off from any blog, too – even if it’s a single post from someone! Because really, if a blogger is able to do any of those five things in a post, it means that they’ll do it again in another post, which makes me not want to continue following their site. Very few bloggers have found fun ways to incorporate ads and sponsored posts into their content without being annoying, and I really don’t get it when people share long “excerpts” of songs, books, etc?? I have shared a few lyrics on my posts before, but it was never so much that it would take credit away from the writer/s. Ugh, cursing is a big one for me, because if someone shares that kind of language on their posts, then they’re either too heated to be writing (i.e. a blogger I won’t want to follow anymore), or they’re just a potty-mouth, and that’s not fun. I feel so bad for the bloggers who are using WordPress to vent about the worst parts of their lives – I come across them so often in the Reader. Part of me wants to help them, but they seem to enjoy wallowing in it most of the time. 😦 The fifth point is good, too, because when a lot of bloggers follow one type of post trend (especially with blog awards at points!), everything gets so repetitive. Gosh, this comment ended up longer than I intended lol!! As you can tell, I completely agree with you 🙂

    1. Haha, no worries! I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one. I love using awards sparingly because they are fun 🙂 and you’re right, they too can be competitive. I think weekly or monthly is great. I’ve followed in the past Christian bloggers who would have one or two curse words in posts. Commenters would sometimes say things, but not in a constructive way, so it just caused more issues and then the blogger felt like they had to defend cursing, which while I do not agree with people judging another for cursing, I do not agree with trying to defend cursing saying God loves us. Two entirely separate things.

I think if/when I have my books up for sale, it would be at the very end, just like I have my social media posts, that way if people don’t want to read them or look into the product, they don’t have to. 🙂 But you’re right, a lot of times the placement is really distracting.

I’m so glad you agree with my points 🙂 I was hoping I didn’t come across as too harsh.

      1. Yes, they are fun! But that’s certainly true 🙂 Ooh that’s weird. I haven’t come across someone like that yet! Constructive criticism via blogging can definitely be a challenge.

That’s a fantastic idea! It keeps your content fresh in people’s minds, without incorporating into your posts that you also wrote this book, or something, haha xD I don’t know how people do it! Constant self-promotion must get tiring.

You didn’t! You spoke the truth, which was appreciated.

  2. I totally agree with you on these! I will say that I don’t mind ads, but that might have something to do with the fact that I’m an unemployed teenager. 😛 I really understand the need of wanting to make money, lol

I also don’t like it when people cuss in blog posts. I feel like it’s so unnecessary and it will definitely turn me away.

Loved reading this post! It was different and unique which I liked. 😀

    1. 🙂 thanks so much, Maddy! I am an unemployed housewife, and I’ve looked into ads on articles and most of them have talked about you only make cents, not much, and it turns away your audience, cause you want a consistent audience. I believe community, in time, will help me find financial stability. God has definitely given me a community as a blessing, and personally, I want to leave my blogs ads free for my audience. ❤ But I totally understand the want to make money, I do too, and I want to make it through writing. I don't mind ads to a point until it slows down the blog and loading everything. Then I'm usually gone.

Thanks for finding this post unique 🙂 I'm trying to come up with new ideas for this blog, and I'm hoping people will enjoy them.

  3. Ooo some interesting ones, and I can see how your personal feelings influence the issue of cursing, and I share your annoying with pages taking an aeon to load because of too many ads. I try not to whine too much but I do want to balance my blog because I want to be honest and sincere to others know they’re not alone with tough days and negative feelings. As you say, however, constant negativity can be pretty bad as it can drag others down, too. I love the sum-up of this post to be different, to be yourself, to stand out! x

    1. Thanks!!! Yes, it is totally okay to be honest and sincere about when we are down. But I’ve left blogs because it was way too heavy. Like the more I read, the more hopeless the blogger felt. Some people can read blogs like that and be entirely okay. But I’m not. I’m so glad you enjoyed this post 🙂

  4. Oh, this is SO true!!! Ads are annoying, and reading song lyrics or someone else’s devotional is just boring. And whining is really just bad. Please stop whining. And I get really mad when Christian bloggers curse on their sites! 😑 And as far as doing the same old same old, for me it just depends on what they’re talking about. But sometimes I do get tired of it. I feel like half the blogs I visit are just people who are nonstop fangirling about Harry Potter or Star Wars!! 😐😐😴😴
(Probably shouldn’t have said that. People are going to be mad at me now😯)

    1. Haha!!! Well, honesty goes a long way I think 🙂 I agree, there are some challenges or trends I do not mind reading from a variety of bloggers. I think what you are saying is you prefer reading originality and that’s okay. 🙂

  5. Yes! These are all perfect. #1–agreed. #2–so agreed. It reads to me as laziness–they wanted to make a blog post but didn’t have any ideas. It’s one thing to use songs and such if you’re adding personal reflections or a devotional or something, but it bugs me when someone’s post is literally just a song or poem or article written by someone else. #3–agreed. #4–so agreed. Strongly dislike when people whine about their viewership. It’s like, okay, guess I as an individual reader mean nothing to you? #5–so agreed. I’ve unfollowed book blogs several times bc they allllll posted the weekly meme from That Artsy Girl. No, I kinda don’t wanna see ten people’s variation on “Book Characters I Would Date” lol

    1. Lol! Yeah, I see what you mean. I think getting resources from somewhere else can totally be beneficial, but if that is all we do I feel it limits our creativity, and may become a crutch, not for everyone, but some. I am honest when the numbers get to me, and I do that because I know other bloggers go through it, and sometimes we can let that blind us versus focusing on the growth we have made, and the consistent community that has remained. Which is why I try to be thankful and grateful, turning perspectives from negative into something positive, the blessings God has allowed me. You’re right, if there is nagging and a sad woe is me, it really is a turn off to readers because they feel insignificant. And we shouldn’t ever try to make anyone feel like that. 🙂 Great point!

  6. These are some really great points, T.R. about why you don’t follow a blog. I definitely like points 2 and 4 because those two I have to remind myself to curb here and there. In terms of “The Same Old Stuff”; I feel like I’ve definitely improved and pushed myself outside of my usual routine and comfort zone and starting to learn more about different topics and how they can be applied to our walk with Christ.

In terms of ” Sharing Other People’s Work Word for Word”, I tend to do this a lot with song lyrics but mainly just the chorus or part of a verse because it really resonates with me. I will, however, have to curb the desire to only post that without providing any commentary on why it resonated with me. Also, in terms of using other people’s work; I tend to do that a lot on my blog (partially stemming from having it ingrained in me by English teachers when dealing with a research topic), but I’m learning to put my own opinion in my posts; because looking back, I failed to do that.

    1. Yes, I’ve seen that a lot n regards to how you are blogging now, and how you blogged then. You definitely are opening up more of your perspective, which is great by the way, because you do have a lot to offer.

One reason why for Song Sundays I do not post the chorus or lyrics and instead just talk about the song itself or what it says to me, is to not give away the lyrics or chorus in my post. I looked into it a few different times last year, and each time I did it seemed like it was more plagiarizing than anything, and I want to follow the law. It’s confusing sometimes because it’s true, you know, there are tons of bloggers and other people who share the lyrics and chorus, but that does not mean it is correct.

I think by you talking more about what you enjoy in music, that will definitely help your audience maybe listen to the song and learn more of what you want to add to the community 🙂
